Caring
for your cutting board
|
A large board for
food preparation.
|
With frequent
use, your wood cutting board will require some minimal maintenance.
Proper care will ensure that it will last for years to come.
Washing: After each use, wash with warm
soapy water, rinse, and towel dry.
NEVER SOAK YOUR CUTTING BOARD! Soaking can cause the board to warp or
crack.
|
Bleaching: It is good to sanitize your cutting
board with a solution of bleach and water occasionally, especially if
you use it for the preparation of meat. This will help to minimize any
buildup of bacteria. Using an antibacterial soap for regular washing is
also
helpful in this regard.
|
| Most
people
are surprised to hear that a wood cutting board may be more resistant
to
bacterial buildup than plastic ones. There is some debate on this
topic,
however, and I can make no claim one way of the other.
Remember to
rinse and air dry your board before storing it.

|
Oiling: Your Gerrybuilt cutting board has
been treated with mineral oil and finished with Clapham's Beeswax Salad Bowl Finish.
With repeated use, this finish will need to be replenished in order to
protect the wood, especially after bleaching. You can use any edible
oil for this purpose, but note that any color in the oil might alter
the appearance of the wood.
|
|
Mineral oil,
canola oil, corn oil, walnut oil and other specialty oils are suitable.
Use of an edible wax product provides additional waterproofing and can
extend the life of your cutting board.
Regualr
application of oil or edible wax will also help to hide inevitable
knife marks.
